MEPN alums return as faculty in Simulation Center

So, you’re a 2nd year MEPN registered for Health Assessment in the upcoming semester and wondering who are some of the faculty teaching in the Simulation Center. Look no further. Three recent MEPN alums will be your clinical faculty. Let’s see who’s on deck…

Lynsie Burg, MSN, RN, CCRN

Currently employed at Sharp Memorial Hospital in the Medical ICU, Professor Burg is a 2012 graduate of the MEPN program. A Torero through and through, Prof. Burg attended USD as an undergrad, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Theology. When she’s not saving lives in the ICU, she enjoys Crossfit, cycling, cooking, surfing, and taking her puppy to the beach.

Professor Burg’s’s advice for your first year as an RN…

“Just because you have your RN license, don’t stop. Keep learning! Set learning goals! Get certified. I read at least one page a day, for 2 years, in my critical care text book. Remember there is always something to learn! Take advantage of every opportunity to learn.”

Derrick Duarte, MSN, RN

After graduating from the MEPN program in 2013, Professor Duarte’s undergrad degree from UCSD in Biochemistry and Cell Biology along with his newly minted MSN made him a stellar candidate for a position in the CCU at UCSD Hillcrest. Even though Professor Duarte works 12-hour nights, he somehow manages to schedule a little time for hiking, rock climbing, camping, backpacking, fishing, and making random arts and craftsJ.

Derrick’s advice to students in the last year of the MEPN program… “Make yourself known to the managers and nurses during leadership, externship, and internship” and “Create your own nursing practice and flow by taking everything you like from all of the different preceptors you’ve ever had.”

“If possible, participate in an International Nursing Mission. It will change your life and your nursing practice, forever.”

 Mary Mann, MSN, RN

Professor Mary Mann obtained her undergraduate degree at University of California, Davis majoring in English Literature with a minor in Biological Sciences. As a 2010 MEPN alum, Professor Mann is currently employed in the CCU (10 West) at UCSD Hillcrest campus.

When asked for her advice for current MEPN students, Professor Mann responded “All of those group projects that I dreaded working on while in the MEPN program…they actually prepare you to work with interdisciplinary teams, different personalities, and to multitask/prioritize better.  Most importantly, in school, I concentrated on absorbing pathophysiology/anatomy, pharmacology, and nursing clinical skills to be a better nurse for my patients. Looking back, I wish I had also spent time learning to be a physical and emotional support for my patients and their families.”
