Mentor program off to a great start

meet and greet 2017-1
On Sunday, August 6th, over 80 MEPN students gathered at Ballast Point Brewery in Little Italy for our first mentor-mentee event of the semester. Incoming students were able to meet their mentors as well as soon-to-be classmates and enjoy rich conversation over a variety of tasty appetizers and beverages. The event was scheduled to take place one day prior to the incoming students’ first day of class to promote a sense of community and connection amongst students and to allay anxious feelings regarding the start of school.

“Our intention with this event,” comments members of the Mentorship Committee, “was to help the first-year students feel part of the MEPN program before they even began. We want them to know there will always be resources available to them in the people they are surrounded by here, and that we stronger when we collaborate and work with one another.”

Graduate Nursing Student Association (GNSA) President, Ann Lawani says that the event “provided an opportunity for [students] to mingle and breathe from our summer semester while trying to ease the fears of the incoming class. It also helped both cohorts develop a rapport, communal spirit and lay the foundation for future nursing collegiality.”

First-year Kelsey Marckstadt comments: “Meeting my mentor and so many of my fellow classmates at the mentor/mentee meet up was a great opportunity to calm my nerves before diving into the MEPN program. After conversing with some of my cohort, it was comforting to discover that we were ALL nervous, but also extremely excited for what was in store for us the following morning. Every second-year that I spoke with, including my own mentor, gave valuable advice that I will be able to take with me through the MEPN program.”
We are thankful for the success of this meet-and-greet event and look forward to future events and collaborations with students from both the MEPN program as well as other programs within Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science. We are so excited to welcome the Class of 2019 to our nursing family during their White Coat Ceremony on Friday, August 25th. We look forward to seeing how this cohort of nurse leaders will contribute the future of the field in innovative and sustainable ways.
